Meaning Of Halal Labels In Eateries

By Rexie Powell

Many of us have seen the term Halal Restaurant put up on establishments, but not all of us know what it means. More and more food items and eateries put up this mark. And although we have an idea that it must have something to do with Islam, we don't know for certain what it is.

Halal, to simplify its meaning, is lawful to Islamic laws. So a halal restaurant means our Muslim friends can eat in the place without breaking any Islamic laws. When an establishment is labeled as a halal restaurant, it means the ingredients and the preparations of the menu are in accordance to the principles of Sharia, or the way or path Muslims should live.

You can say that a halal restaurant attends to of all its customers. It's easy to be a halal restaurant in Muslim countries, but in nations that have integrated religious groups, not every establishment hassles themselves to be halal-certified. So when an eatery prefers to be a halal restaurant and practices all food preparation according to the Islamic rules when it is located in an area where there are integrated groups, then it just means that it prioritizes all the customers they have.

Even though halal-certified restaurants are growing, being one isn't as simple as merely positioning a sign outside the establishment and declaring they abide by the Islamic rules. It takes precise practice from beginning to end. From the slaughtering of its meat to the selection of a meal's ingredients, to the preparation of the menu.

It also doesn't end there. There are a lot of other practices and rules a halal restaurant must abide by. The utensils and materials used for the preparation of non-halal items should never be used in preparation of halal food to avoid cross-contamination.

Halal-certified restaurants give their clients more selections. For our Muslim brothers and sisters, halal eateries allow them to dine in and enjoy good food without compromising their religious beliefs. They don't need to settle for less food quality. That is how halal restaurants give more value to their patrons.
